What makes it easy?
Mechanics, not a label. The answers are common nouns everyone can spell, the clues describe things plainly and skip puns, and each clue ends with the answer's letter count in brackets. There are no abbreviations, no crossword-only vocabulary and no general knowledge deeper than a walk around the neighborhood.
A good first crossword
If someone has never solved a crossword, start them here: the grid is compact, every answer crosses another, and a wrong guess reveals itself quickly instead of quietly ruining a corner. When this one feels comfortable, the animal crossword is the natural next step, and the science one is waiting after that.
SUN, MOON and a walk through town
SUN is the shortest answer, three letters, and it is the star that lights up our day. The long ones stop at six letters: YELLOW, SCHOOL, BRIDGE, DOCTOR and GARDEN. HOUSE does the most work, crossing YELLOW, SCHOOL and BRIDGE, so filling it early helps three answers at once. A child who knows that lemons and bananas are yellow already has a way in, and the clue about a road over a river gives BRIDGE, which leads to TRAIN and GARDEN. MOON changes shape through the month and hangs off TRAIN.
