What makes it easy?
Mechanics, not a label. The answers are common nouns everyone can spell, the clues describe rather than pun, and each clue ends with the answer's letter count in brackets. There are no abbreviations, no crossword-only vocabulary and no general knowledge deeper than a walk around the neighborhood.
A good first crossword
If someone has never solved a crossword, start them here: the grid is compact, every answer crosses another, and a wrong guess reveals itself quickly instead of quietly ruining a corner. When this one feels comfortable, the animal crossword is the natural next step, and the science one is waiting after that.
