Food crossword puzzle
Twelve clues about the food on an ordinary table: things you bake, peel, spread and eat with a spoon. Nothing exotic, everything crossable.
The grid and the clues
12 clues to solve: 6 across and 6 down.
Across
- 1. Baked food made from flour, water and yeast (5)
- 3. Hot dish you eat with a spoon (4)
- 4. Dairy food that can be fresh or aged; cartoon mice love it (6)
- 7. Italian dish: a round base with tomato and cheese (5)
- 9. Long yellow fruit you peel (6)
- 10. Yellow spread churned from cream (6)
Down
- 2. Round fruit, red or green; one a day keeps the doctor away (5)
- 4. Orange root vegetable rabbits love (6)
- 5. The hen lays it; you can boil, fry or scramble it (3)
- 6. Cold dish of mixed raw vegetables, often with lettuce (5)
- 8. Sweet golden food made by bees (5)
- 11. Small white grain, the base of paella and sushi (4)
What is on the menu?
Fruit, a vegetable, dairy, grains and the sweetest thing bees make. Every clue describes what the food is or what you do with it, never a brand or a recipe, so the puzzle stays solvable years from now. The answers run from three letters to six, a comfortable range where the crossings do a lot of the work for you.
A tip for crossword beginners
Read all the clues once before writing anything, and start with the one you are surest of. Each letter you place is a free hint for every answer that crosses it. If a crossing produces a letter that cannot start or continue your word, do not force it: one of the two answers is wrong, and it is usually the one you guessed.
