What words are in the Thanksgiving word search?
The board at the top of this page hides twelve of them: turkey, pilgrim, harvest, pumpkin, gravy, family, grateful, feast, corn, pie, autumn and dinner. They run from three letters (PIE) to eight (GRATEFUL) and sit across, down and diagonally. The eleven printable boards below carry another 128 Thanksgiving words between them.
None of the twelve was picked at random. Six are the meal, three are the people around it, two are the season it sits in, and one is as close as a word search gets to the name of the day. Here is what each is doing there.
- TURKEY, the bird the entire day is planned around, and the only word here that doubles as the name of a country.
- PILGRIM, the passengers of the 1620 crossing, and the reason a paper hat turns up on every classroom display in November.
- HARVEST, the point of the original feast: the crop was in and the winter suddenly looked survivable.
- PUMPKIN, the field crop that becomes the pie, and usually the first word a five year old spots on the grid.
- GRAVY, the sauce the whole meal is judged on. Its G and V are rare in the random fill, so it gives itself away early.
- FAMILY, who the day is for, and the word most likely to be found by somebody who is not really looking.
- GRATEFUL, eight letters and the longest word on the board. Spelled GRATE, not GREAT: it shares a root with gratitude, not with anything being big.
- FEAST, what a meal is called once there is deliberately too much of it.
- CORN, grown by the Wampanoag and taught to the colonists, which is the reason it is on the plate at all.
- PIE, three letters and always the last one found. P, I and E are three of the commonest letters in the fill, so the grid is full of near misses.
- AUTUMN, the season the day sits in, spelled the way a calendar spells it rather than the way most Americans say it.
- DINNER, the meal itself, eaten at three in the afternoon and still called dinner by everyone present.
Two spellings worth settling before you print a stack. Thanksgiving is one word, no hyphen and no space, and it takes a capital T because it is the name of a day rather than a thing you do. And it is grateful with one L, however much the word wants a second one.
Twelve is the short list. The dinner board below adds the sides, the harvest board adds the field the food came from, and the giant 18x18 adds the basting, the cousins and the nap afterwards, so between them the eleven sheets on this page hold 140 Thanksgiving words with no word repeated on any two of them.

Thanksgiving is a whole day rather than a theme, so six of the extra boards follow it hour by hour: the food, where the food came from, the word the holiday is named after, the parade on the television, the history argued about at the table and the person doing all the cooking.
