Sports word search
Twelve sports are hiding in this grid, from a four letter golf to a full ten letter basketball. Warm up your eyes first.
Play it right here
Drag across the letters to select a word. Words hide across, down and diagonally, forwards and backwards. Works with mouse and touch.
The starting lineup
Soccer, tennis, basketball, swimming, baseball, hockey, golf, rugby, volleyball, cycling, boxing and skiing. BASKETBALL and VOLLEYBALL are the ten letter giants that barely fit, which paradoxically makes them the easy finds. GOLF is four common letters and will dodge you for a while, exactly as golf does.
American football is missing from this list on purpose: it has a board of its own, the football word search, where quarterback, touchdown, blitz and scrimmage take over. The two grids share no words.
SOCCER is on this board as one of the twelve, but the game is far too big for a single entry: it has seven boards of its own on the soccer word search, one each for the positions, the kit, the skills, the pitch, the rules and the cup nights. Nothing there repeats anything here.
Half-time entertainment
This is the sheet for the long bus ride to the away game, or the rain delay. Team variation: split the list, first side to find their six sports wins, loser carries the kit. The words are concrete and physical, which makes this one popular with kids who claim they hate word games.
Print it or play it
Play it on this page or print the free PDF; the solution sheet marks all twelve sports for the post-match review. Board, PDF and solution come from one generated puzzle, so they always agree.
Frequently asked questions
Is the sports word search free to print for a class or a team?
Yes. The sports word search prints free for classrooms, PE lessons, sports clubs and team bus journeys, in any quantity, with no attribution required. There is no sign-up. You may not sell the PDF or upload it to another site, which is the whole of our licensing policy in one line.
What age is the sports puzzle for?
Ages 6 to 11, or US grades 1 to 5. The 12x12 grid holds twelve sports words from four letters (GOLF) up to ten (BASKETBALL). The long compound names are the easy finds, since a ten letter word has very few places it can fit in a 12x12 grid.
Can we play the sports word search online?
Yes. The grid on this page plays in the browser on any device, so it works on a phone on the coach to an away game. Drag across the letters and each word is struck off the list as you find it. The free printable PDF is there if you want a paper copy for the changing room wall.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. A separate solution PDF marks all twelve sports words on the same 12x12 grid. Download it with the Solution button beside the puzzle. It is deliberately a second file, so a coach or a teacher can hand out clean sheets and hold the answers back.
Seven sports word searches to print, and none of them is football
Six extra boards, and they lean deliberately summer and Olympic, because the ball games already have pages of their own: the soccer word search runs six boards from the positions to the cup nights, the football word search has the American game, and the winter word search owns the skiing and the curling. What is left is the track, the Games, the pool, the kit bag, the four racket sports and the gym floor. Two word terms run together on the grid: shot put is SHOTPUT, pole vault is POLEVAULT, water polo is WATERPOLO.

The 12x12 board on this page
The board above, printed: twelve sports with BASKETBALL and VOLLEYBALL as the ten letter giants that barely fit, which paradoxically makes them the easy finds, and GOLF dodging you exactly as golf does.

The track: everything decided by a clock or a tape
A 13x13 board in all eight directions for the oldest sport there is: the sprint, the marathon, the hurdles, the steeplechase, the javelin, the discus, the shot put, the high jump, the long jump and the pole vault.

The Games, 14x14: the fortnight itself
The biggest sheet on the page, 14x14: the torch relay, the Olympic rings, the host city, the athletes village, the anthem on the podium, the gold, silver and bronze medals, the flag bearer and the Paralympics after.

The pool and the bay: nine of these need no shoes
A 12x12 board for everything done in water and not on sand: the backstroke, the breaststroke, the freestyle, the diving board, water polo, rowing, sailing, the windsurf, the flip turn, the lane rope and the regatta.

The kit bag: what is in it on a Saturday
The contents of one bag by the front door, on a 12x12 board: the mouthguard, the knee pads, the stopwatch, the trainers, the tracksuit, the water bottle, the weights, the skipping rope, the cones and the wristband.

The four racket sports, and the scoring
One 12x12 board for badminton, squash, table tennis and pickleball, plus the words they argue in: the shuttlecock, the paddle, the smash, the deuce, the baseline, the rally, the topspin and the drop shot.

The gym floor: four apparatus and six moves
A 12x12 board split between the apparatus and what you do on it: the balance beam, the uneven bars, the pommel horse, the still rings, the floor routine, the somersault, the cartwheel, the handstand and the dismount.
